Online psychodynamic therapy to understand why you feel the way you do

Sometimes the same hurt, the same argument or the same feeling of not being good enough keeps coming back. Psychodynamic therapy helps you understand where those patterns began and why they still have a hold. You can do it by secure video, from home.

What Is Psychodynamic Therapy?

How your past shapes your present

Psychodynamic therapy is a talking therapy rooted in psychoanalysis. It shares the same core idea: that a lot of what drives our feelings and behaviour happens outside our awareness. But it's usually less intensive, with one session a week, and can be shorter term.

The focus is on bringing unconscious patterns into view. Often these were formed early in life, as ways of coping with the people and situations around us. They made sense then, but they can quietly cause problems now, in relationships, at work or in how we treat ourselves.

Online psychodynamic therapy gives you space to explore those patterns with a trained therapist, at your own pace. The aim isn't just to feel better for a while, but to understand yourself well enough that lasting change becomes possible.

Key Ideas

What psychodynamic therapists pay attention to

A few core ideas guide the work. You don't need to know them in advance, but they help explain what sessions are like.

The unconscious

Feelings, memories and wishes we're not fully aware of can still steer our choices. Therapy helps make them more conscious.

The past in the present

Early relationships often form a template for later ones. Spotting the link can explain why certain situations hit so hard.

Defences

We all protect ourselves from painful feelings, by avoiding, denying or keeping busy. Therapy looks gently at when these defences help and when they hold you back.

The therapy relationship

How you feel about your therapist can mirror other relationships in your life. Talking about it openly is a powerful way to learn about yourself.

What Sessions Are Like

A space to talk freely and honestly

Psychodynamic sessions are less structured than some therapies. There's no homework or worksheets. You're encouraged to talk about whatever is on your mind, and your therapist will listen closely, notice themes and gently reflect them back to you.

Over time, links start to appear between past and present, and between what you say and how you feel. Some of our therapists combine psychodynamic ideas with other approaches in integrative counselling, so we can help you find the style that suits you.

FAQs

Questions about psychodynamic therapy

For many people, yes. Psychodynamic work is all about talking and being heard, and that happens naturally over a secure video call. Some find it easier to open up from home.

Psychodynamic therapy grew out of psychoanalysis but is usually less intensive. You'd typically meet once a week rather than several times, and it can be shorter term.

CBT focuses on changing thoughts and behaviours in the here and now, often with exercises between sessions. Psychodynamic therapy looks more at underlying feelings and where they came from. Both can help; they just work differently.

Some people come for a few months with a clear focus, others prefer open-ended, longer-term work. You'll review progress with your therapist and you're never locked in.

That's completely normal. Your therapist will help you get started, and even silences or not knowing can tell you something useful. There's no right or wrong way to do it.

You'll find our current prices on our fees page. Sessions last 50 minutes.
