What Is Relationship Therapy?

Understanding how you relate to others

Relationship therapy is counselling that focuses on your relationships and how you experience them. It can be done on your own, looking at the patterns that show up across all your relationships, or together with a partner, focusing on what's happening between you.

A lot of how we connect with people is learned early on, often without us realising. If you tend to pick the same kind of partner, struggle to trust, avoid conflict at all costs or feel you give far more than you get, therapy can help you see where that comes from.

Once you understand your patterns, you have more choice. You can start to respond differently, ask for what you need and build relationships that feel safer and more equal.

How It Works

What relationship therapy looks like

Sessions are shaped around you and what you want to change. Here's what the work often involves.

Individual sessions

You meet a therapist on your own to explore your relationships from your side. This is a good option if your partner doesn't want to come, or if the issue is about patterns rather than one person.

Sessions with a partner

You and your partner meet a therapist together, either in one room or from different places. This is what's often called couples counselling.

Looking at the past

Your therapist may explore early relationships and experiences, because they often shape how we attach to people now. Attachment-based therapy takes this approach.

Trying new things

Therapy is a safe place to practise being honest, setting boundaries or expressing needs, before trying it in your real relationships.

Why Choose Relationship Therapy

Why choose relationship therapy online

Relationships are at the centre of most of our lives, so when they're not working it affects everything. Relationship therapy gives you space to step out of the day-to-day and think clearly, with someone who isn't caught up in it and won't judge you or take sides.

Having sessions online makes it easier to start. You can talk from home, at times that suit you, including evenings and weekends. Every therapist at the clinic is qualified, insured, registered with a professional body and personally interviewed by our founder, Kay. Get in touch and we'll help you choose between individual and couple sessions.

FAQs

Questions about relationship therapy

If a relationship is taking up a lot of your thoughts, affecting your mood or keeps going wrong in the same way, therapy can really help. You don't need to wait until things are at breaking point. Earlier support often makes change easier.

Yes. Individual relationship therapy focuses on you: your feelings, your patterns and what you want. Changing how you respond can shift the relationship too, even if your partner never comes to a session.

Couples counselling always involves both partners. Relationship therapy is a broader term. It can include couples work, but also individual therapy about any relationship, whether with a partner, family, friends or colleagues.

It can be. Many single people come to understand why relationships haven't worked out, recover from a breakup or feel more confident about dating again. You don't need a current partner to benefit.

It depends on what you'd like to work on. Some people come for a few sessions around a specific decision, while others prefer longer-term work on deeper patterns. You and your therapist will review how things are going together.

You'll find our current prices on our fees page. Sessions last 50 minutes.
